Please feel at home. The palace belongs to all Biscayans. And even if you're
not from here, you're just as welcome, because the provincial government
wants to keep up the proud tradition of hospitality for which Bizkaia has
always been renowned.
This tour will give you an interactive view of the inside and outside of
the building, with all its rooms and the art work it houses.
The Provincial Government Building was inaugurated on 31 July 1900 - the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the patron saint of Bizkaia, making it over a century old. It was designed by the Aragonese architect Luis Aladrén, who lived in San Sebastian.
The headquarters of the provincial government previously stood in Bilbaos Plaza Nueva. But by the end of the nineteenth century, it was felt that a new building was required to meet the growth in industry, mining, shipping and trade in Bizkaia.
Aside from the architectural and ornamental value of the building itself, the Provincial Government Building is also a treasure house of paintings and other art work which we now invite you to view.
