In 1876, Bizkaia lost its traditional fueros - local laws or liberties - and they were not restored until 1979. During this period, the Session Hall was used for the provincial sessions, but today this fine hall is a symbol of a bygone era. It plays host to social, cultural, political and institutional events requiring a certain special air of solemnity.
The furniture in the room is austere, with plain, functional desks, and an almost complete absence of gilding, marble, bronze or marquetry, in contrast to the character and contents of some of the palace's more majestic rooms.
